The simple & cheap method

Website promotion is a broad subject. The two most important things you need to do to bring traffic to your site are:

  1. Get listed with the major search engines & directories
  2. Get other sites to link to your site

The higher your site ranks in search engine results, the more traffic you'll get. That's why it's important to learn how to improve your ranking by "optimizing" your site before you submit it. Search engine optimization includes implementing meta tags effectively and ensuring that your site design includes the things that search engines look for.

It seems like everywhere you look, you're being told that you have to submit your site to "hundreds" or even "thousands" of search engines to see results. This is simply not true. Focus on major search engines and directories, and on pages created specifically for the topic featured on your site.

Unless your site has many pages, it's best to submit it "by hand" rather than using submission software or a submission service. Search engines may recognize automated submission methods and refuse to accept them.

You can use search engines and directories to find sites related to yours. These might benefit from your site's content. If so, write a polite, individualized email to them suggesting a link exchange. Individualization is crucial due to the proliferation of automated link exchange requests. A number of sites now filter out automated requests as spam.

Explain why linking to your site would be good for the other site's visitors. Provide your URL. Don't insist that they use specific text or images. This will lessen your chances of a response.
